100 years of Einstein
2005 is the 100 year anniversary of the publishing of Al Einstein’s most influential work. Millions can recite the theory of relativity as a simple equation, but have no real understanding of complexities that cannot be explained in three dimensions.It was a quantum (pardon the pun) leap in understanding the nature of space, time, matter and energy. They are related/relative. Matter bends Space, and if it goes fast enough Time slows down. Matter can absorb, store and convert Energy. But since time-space compresses as you approach the speed of light, light speed is a maximum velocity for matter.
Do you like your CD/DVD player, Laser leveling device, Video Camera, automatic door opener, smoke detector? All of these devices rely on Relativity or Quantum Physics in one form or another. Lasers, Solar Cells, light sensors, transistors, are controlled by quantum physics. Energy can have the properties of matter (particles) and waves at the same time. When particles smack particles, electrons or other particles happen.
When the GPS constellation ( for all you Gay and Feminist studies majors, that's the 60+ satellites that transmit calibrated signals that allow precision positioning through sophisticated algorithms) was designed , there was dissent as to whether the system needed to be corrected for time slowing due to the speed of the satellites. The system was orbited with the clock correction feature disabled. Soon after, it was activated. GPS wouldn’t work without correction for the effect of velocity on time-space.
If you don’t understand, don’t feel ignunt. I don’t either. But it’s enough to be thankful for a humble patent clerk that worked on his papers in the evening, endeavoring to comprehend the nature of the macro and micro universes.
